Famous Cities of the World: Munich

Munich is one of Germany's most popular destination after Berlin, due in part to its handy proximity to previously verboten destinations like Prague and Budapest. The city is a haven for high culture, with a staggering array of museums and a vibrant arts scene, and popular culture doesn't get much more plebian than the infamous Oktoberfest.

Munich is home to many publishing houses (fewer only than New York City) and also to The Seddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany's largest daily newspapers. There are three media clusters in the Munich region among them the Bavaria Film Studios which are located in the suburb of Grunwald and which are one of Europe's biggest and most famous movie production studios. Munich is one of Europe's leading research and innovation environments.

Munich is also home to some attractive art galleries which can be predominantly found in the Kunstareal quarter. Originally a farmers market, the Viktualienmarket is Munich’s most popular market for fresh food and delicatessen and the selection, exclusivity and variety of the products offered contribute to its popularity. Munich is an international city, so you are unlikely to encounter problems because you're a foreigner. However, the possibility of encountering racism or other prejudices cannot be completely ruled out. Munich is an important center of higher education, banking and the films and media industry. It is also the home of world-famous beers.

Munich is the capital of Bavaria and is the third largest city in Germany. The city is home to 1.3 million people and has one of the most comprehensive metro and suburban train networks in Germany. Munich is an absolute brilliant place. There is no shortage of things to do from taking a bike tour around the heart of Munich to seeing the Olympic arena and pool. Munich is very close to Austria, Switzerland and after a short hop through Austria, also Italy.

Munich provides an inspiring mix of celebrated buildings and impressive architecture including medieval castles, historic churches and world famous museums. Munich has the strongest economy of any German city and is home to the headquarters of Siemens AG (electronics), BMW (car), MAN AG (truck manufacturer, engineering), Linde (gases), Allianz (insurance) and Munich Re (re-insurance).
